The Full Story
The restoration work was probably the most satisfying and beneficial to my career. My mentor at the time was an old-fashioned painter named Ken Townsend. An inspiration to doing the job right the 1st time.
The preparation was the most crucial step as this is what the future coats had to adhere to. No dilution to the paint, do not add water as this breaks down the paint molecules and harms the finish, the paint can not do what it was designed to do, so straight from the can was our motto.
The repainting experience also taught me what tradies were doing wrong on new houses. For example, all new plasterboard must be sealed and all new surfaces must have a minimum of 3 coats including a suitable sealer/undercoat, Australian Standards, if not the paint may not adhere to the new surface and peeling paint can develop with any sign of water damage or moisture.
I moved on to painting TAFE buildings, schools, Woolworth’s shopping centre’s, commercial buildings, new unit complexes, retirement village, Child Care Centre’s and residential repaints. Repainting became my passion. Dealing with clients 1st hand and working through their painting needs became my specialty, colour consultation also became a part of my experience, working with a colour consultant for a number of years learning colour placement.
